The Vietnamese Name: Sầu riêng

Durian is called “Sầu riêng” in Vietnamese. To ask a shop to open it, you can say:

Bổ giúp tôi nhé.
“Please open it for me.”

The 6 in Ri6 is pronounced “sáu” in Vietnamese, so the name is read approximately “Ri sáu.”

Durian Prices and Where to Buy It in Vietnam

Prices vary with variety, grade, origin, season and whether you buy a whole fruit or only the flesh. Whole fruit may be sold by weight including its rind. Confirm the price per kilogram and how the weight is calculated.

When the author bought Ri6 at a Hanoi supermarket on August 2, 2026, the price was 109,000 VND per kilogram. The fruit weighed 1.502 kg, for a total of 163,718 VND. This is an actual purchase at one shop, not a nationwide market price.

Price varies with variety, grade, season, sales stage and format. 109,000 VND/kg is a purchase example from one shop.

Markets and Street Fruit Sellers

You may be able to choose a whole fruit and have it opened on the spot. Confirm the variety, price per kilogram and whether the charged weight includes the rind.

Specialist Fruit Shops

Specialist shops can make it easier to check variety and origin, and some sell flesh alone. Quality guarantees differ from shop to shop.

Supermarkets

Supermarkets display prices clearly and offer prepared packs. Starting with a small portion makes it easier to see whether you enjoy durian.

To ask the price, try:

Một ký này bao nhiêu tiền?
“How much is this per kilogram?”

How to Choose Durian: Checking Ripeness

Ripeness checks vary with the variety and whether fruit fell naturally or was harvested at commercial maturity. Spike color alone cannot tell you whether it is ready. Consider the following signs together.

  1. Tell the seller when you will eat it: Say whether you want it today or on a later day, and ask for fruit suited to that timing.
  2. Aroma: Look for the variety’s characteristic sweet aroma. Avoid a strong fermented, sour or rotten smell.
  3. Rind: Check for mold, leaking liquid, pest damage and large open cracks.
  4. Shape: Look for visible bulges of the chambers and avoid excessively misshapen fruit.
  5. Prepared flesh: Check for drying, discoloration and leakage, and make sure it is kept at the labeled storage temperature.

Do not press neighboring spikes together with bare hands; they can injure you. Fruit harvested before adequate maturity may not develop a good eating quality simply by being left at room temperature.

How to Open Durian: Four Steps for Beginners

For a first purchase, having the shop open it is convenient. If opening it yourself, prepare thick gloves, a non-slip surface and a manageable knife. Stabilize the fruit and keep the blade moving away from your hands. Striking it against the ground or a board can make it jump or cause injuries from the spikes.

At the bottom, opposite the stem, the seams between sections meet in a star-like pattern.

  1. Place the bottom facing up and stabilize the fruit so it cannot move.
  2. Insert the knife tip shallowly near the center of a seam.
  3. Gradually widen the cut along the seam, keeping the blade away from your hands.
  4. Remove the knife, then open the rind with thick gloves or a sturdy spatula.

Once the rind is open, remove the flesh and avoid the seeds. If the blade will not enter easily, do not force it: ask the shop or someone experienced.

Four Ways to Enjoy Durian in Vietnam

1. Eat the Fresh Flesh

Remove the flesh from its chamber and eat around the large seed. A small portion of prepared flesh is a good first taste.

2. Xôi sầu riêng: Durian Sticky Rice

This sweet dish combines sticky rice, coconut milk and durian. Depending on the shop, the flesh may be mixed in or served on top.

3. Ice Cream and Smoothies

Chilled desserts offer a different texture from fresh flesh. Processing does not necessarily make the aroma weaker.

4. Chè, Crepes and Sweets

Durian also appears in chè, crepes, cakes and other sweets. Ingredients and the amount of fruit vary by shop, so try a small serving of whatever appeals to you.

How to Store Durian: Refrigerating and Freezing

Follow the shop’s storage label and eat the fruit promptly. Refrigerate removed flesh in an airtight container that contains its smell. For longer storage, wrap individual portions and freeze them in sealed bags. Do not eat it if it develops an unusual odor or discoloration during storage.

How a whole fruit ripens after purchase depends on maturity at harvest. If the shop advises ripening it, keep it away from heat and direct sunlight and check its condition. Do not leave ripe fruit or removed flesh at room temperature for a long time.

Eating Durian: Alcohol, Portions and Health Conditions

An in vitro study found that durian extract inhibited aldehyde dehydrogenase from yeast, but it did not establish human risk or safe intake levels for durian with alcohol. Avoid eating large quantities while drinking alcohol.

If you follow a prescribed diet, adjust the portion according to your usual advice. Ask your doctor or dietitian about individual circumstances such as a potassium restriction.

Give priority to your portion size and how you feel, rather than relying on rumors about food combinations.

Can You Bring Fresh Durian to Japan?

Japan’s Plant Protection Station list for items carried from Vietnam permits durian when it is accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate from the exporting government authority and passes plant quarantine inspection on arrival in Japan. Airlines and transit countries may impose additional restrictions; check before booking.

Import is permitted subject to quarantine requirements. Check airline and transit-country rules separately.

Airline rules also matter. Vietnam Airlines’ guidance asks passengers to avoid carrying odorous foods in the cabin and places conditions on checked baggage, including weight and sealing. Rules may vary with codeshare operators and aircraft, so check the requirements for your flight.

The flesh around the seed was so soft it broke apart when touched. It was smooth like cream cheese and pleasantly sticky. Because of the strong smell, the cafe directed me to outdoor seating.
